County Superintendent Appointment

​​Orange County Board of Education to Appoint Successor to Dr. Al Mijares as County Superintendent of Schools

Dr. Al Mijares has announced his retirement as Orange County Superintendent of Schools, effective June 30, 2024. The Orange County Board of Education will appoint a successor to complete the remainder of Dr. Mijares' term, which ends on January 4, 2027.


Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the role of County Superintendent of Schools, candidates must:

  • Be a legal resident and a registered voter of Orange County at the time of appointment.
  • Possess a valid administrative credential authorizing administrative services in California.

 

Application Process

Interested candidates are required to submit the following materials by 5 p.m. on May 10, 2024:

  • A resume detailing qualifications and experience.
  • No more than three letters of reference.

Note: All submitted materials must be received by the deadline. Materials not received by 5 p.m. on May 10, 2024, will not be accepted, regardless of the postmark date. All documents will be public information and available for review during normal business hours at the Orange County Department of Education.


Role and Responsibilities

The County Superintendent of Schools holds critical responsibilities, which include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervising schools administered by the Orange County Department of Education (OCDE).
  • Serving as the employer of record for all OCDE staff.
  • Managing all programs and services provided by the OCDE.
  • Providing fiscal oversight of each school district within the county.
  • Ensuring the availability of sufficient textbooks and instructional materials for all students.
